I'm going to put a 4/0 cable on my battery's positive terminal. But I'm not clear on the negative. Do I need a bigger cable there, too, to get the better start? My cables right now are both 1 gauge.

The original neg. cable was a flat uninsulated strip. There is no reason that you could not use an insulated type positive cable of a large gauge.

I made up a couple of cables from electric welding cable to make sure I got the full 6v to the starter. Works well.
