The 39 chev generator has two wires GEN and Field that go the regulator terminals. Anyone know which one is supposed to be the heavier guage wire? Is it GEN that carries the current?? Thanks, Mike

Excellent, since I have a wiring expert on the line I have another question.. on a Master 85, is the heater switch connected to 6V and it powers the fan or is connected to ground and the fan always has power like the horn? Thanks,Mike

Normal circuit is from the Amp Meter/ignition switch to the switch and then to the fan. The fan is always grounded by the base/or a black wire coming out of the fan motor.

Ok, but if the heater switch is connected to the ignition switch/ammeter then it won't be fused. The only fuse I can find is a 30A on the headlight switch and it seems it fuses all of the lights and anything else connected to the headlight switch but doesn't fuse the horn or the regulator. Is this correct? Thanks, Mike

The heater switch was connected to the "dead terminal" of the ignition switch. This is the terminal that is hot only when the switch is on.The heater installation instructions make no mention of a fuse and the wiring diagram shows no fuse. You could insert an in-line fuse holder and fuse if desired. The radio installation wiring came with a fuse but it was probably more for the protection of the radio. I would suggest about a 15 AMP fuse for the heater.

The '39 that I had years ago had a 20 amp fuse mounted on the back of the heater switch. Don't know if you have the same switch? My '40 has the same type of switch as the '39 had. My '40 is wired as Gene sez and as far as I know still has the original 20 amp fuse. I've had the car since 1963 and have never changed the fuse.

The 1939 switch had no fuse.1939 had a rotator type switch. The 1940 had the flipper lever switch.

As we seem to be on behind-the-dash electrics, could someone tell me what type of warning bulb fitted the rotary switch with rheostat on the BF Goodrich heater in my '39. The original fuse arrangement on the back of my electric clock still remains a mystery too.

The most likely bulb would be the 51. The clock probably has a special fuse. Should have a number or identification of some kind.

Thanks Ray. The clock goes but the fuse was missing entirely. It seems to have been a specially made device. Guess I'll have to make something up.
