I'm getting my '31 Special Sedan fenders back next week from the painter. The paint has a clear coat on it but I'm worried about chipping on the bottom sides of the fender wheel wells. I've seen some of the temporary well covers some of you guys use but I'd like something more permanent. My painter is recommending a 3M product called Paint Defender. It's a spray on invisible film. What are your thoughts on this for fender well protection?
Thanks,
Bill

A local painter offered up a crinkle type spray application used in new vehicles. I wanted it closer to stock. The clear may be a compromise. Gravel and or rocks spinning off the wheel I would imagine would have a lot of velocity. How a thin coat of paint would prevent a ding is beyond me.

My car is black so I used Rustoleum rattle can spray sealer.I got it at Home Depot. It's the same stuff they sell on TV. (Flex Seal) .But it also now comes in clear. It's a rubber like sealer that may help cushion any flying rocks from damaging your paint. It's on the spray paint aisle. You may want to test it on something else first. It sprays on like paint.Pretty neat stuff.I also did the inside of my floors and trunk with it.The uses are endless.

I have twin sidemounts on my '31 Coach and as you may know, this means the spare tire wells are quite close to the wheels, pretty much right in line with them and fairly visible from side on or front view. After epoxy priming my inner fenders including the inside of the wheel wells, I sprayed on "Rocker Guard", a rubber like product that leaves a slightly pebbled finish and goes on in a very even finish. I then over sprayed this with 2 coats of black semi-gloss paint. Makes a very nice (even if not original) finish and I am hoping will not chip as easily as bare paint. Time will tell.
