I'm in the process of restoring the engine compartment and I am looking for the proper color for the valve cover. Currently it is black, but I believe that it is supposed to be blue. If it is, does anyone know where I can purchase the proper shade? Thanks for your time.

When it stops being fun, I don't want to do it anymore.

The engine should be dark blue-gray and you can get the correct color from the Filling Station. www.fillingstation.com

The engine was dark blue-gray.

The complete engine, minus the accessories like the starter, generator, carburetor, distributor and etc. was painted as a unit at the factory.

1953 car engine (with standard transmission) were the same gray/blue.
1953-1962 1/2, 3/4 1 and 1 1/2 ton truck engines were blue gray including 8 cylinder models.
1953 Power Glide and all 1954-1962 car engines were blue.

I believe the tube and caps were black, but don't quote me. Junkyard Dog and Chevgene are more knowledgeable.
Double check your engine number to make sure it is actually a 1949.

National Chevy and Chevs of the forties have the paint you need.

Filling station guy said the breather tube and dip were painted engine color

Didn't think to ask about the cap?

The breather tube was black. The dip stick was not painted. The oil filler cap on the valve cover was in place when the engine was painted so it was gray....The area on the valve over that it contacted was then unpainted due to the cap being installed. often see them unpainted but this is correct. Would have been unpainted iif you purchased a new one through the parts dept.

What color was the dip stick then?

I'm guess the shaft tube was painted engine color?

The dip stick tube was installed before the engine was painted so it was gray.
