We have a 1974 Chevy pickup. With a 350 engine, 4brl carb. Points and Condencers last only about 1000 miles; the engine backfires. After I install new points and condenser it runs fine for about 1000 miles....Then starts all over again. The fella I got it from installed a dual battery set up for a camper, and a new alternator. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Sounds like you have a faulty resistor, since you are running a point setup. First, check that you do have a resistor, or a resistor wire, and if so, what the voltage is at the positive side of the hot coil. It should only be around 7 volts; if it is 12-14 with the car running, that is the problem. Also, are your old points showing signs of bluing or discoloration when you remove them? If so, definitely too much voltage coming through, another tell-tale sign.

In 1974 no resistor was used. Resistance wire was used. Sounds like the ignition is hooked-up to a constant 12 volt sorce. If 12 volts is found while engine is running add a resistor from a 1957 Chev. You should end up with 12 V while starting and 7 volts when the key is in the run position.

You might also want to check the dwell when it is running bad and that would tell you that the points are closing, and the rubbing block wearing down. Are you using a lube on the point rubbing block?

Check the lobes on the distributor for wear,a neighbor had a 70 Pontiac that a couple were worn and the points would not stay gapped correctly.

Thanks for your answer. Would installing HEI distributor solve the problem?

Yes it would help if the problem is in the distributor.

If you use an HEI do hot use the resistor wire from the coil to power the HEI, it needs full battery voltage.
