We have now acquired our second chevy (yes they are addictive!) 1928 tourer. This was a deceased estate partially restored but has no id plates. Body is in great condition but no one can find the plates. How hard is it to register without plates or body nber, and is there any register that can match what car an engine relates to?

This is an australian car

I had no plates on mine either. All you need to register the car is an engine and body or vin number. The engine number is easy cause they all have one of them. For the body number I borrowed some number stamps and made up a random six digit code and stamped it into the rail near the passenger side front wheel. Bit of matt black paint and drive through a few puddles, looks like its always been there. The folks at the transport department are happy as long as they see numbers. There is a one in million chance someone has the same number as me but its been 3 years and no one has come knocking on the door yet.

Thanks John!
My ute is registered with the Car number on the ID plates as the chassis number, which i assumed was the norm but this is welcome news :)

The cars were delivered to Australia as an incomplete kit. The chassis were not numbered. There was a tag in the kit which carried a number Usually 22AB and four numbers; mine is 22 AB 7078. There were about 7500 delivered to Australia in 1928. The tag was nailed to the seat riser RH side near the driver. Other simple plates were nailed to the LH sill. As mentioned you can simply make up a number. If you like you can use 22AB and toss in other numbers.

Thanks terry, my initial hopes was to locate some old plates so there wasn't a double up in numbers off a wreck, but by the sounds of limited chance of that happening!
