We drove our '41 about 200 miles round trip yesterday to a car show. While driving I noticed some minor noise and a slight quiver in the speedometer needle when accelerating and decelerating. I replaced the cable with a new one (and lubricated it) a few months ago. Should I attempt to lubricate the speedometer itself, or should I send it off for repair, or should I not worry 'til it quits?

This is usually the cable. I would pull out the insides of the cable from the speedo end and check it for frayed wires. If it looks good, re-greasing it should take care of it. You can check the speedo itself by turning (spinning) a small screwdriver in the cable socket. If the needle does not move smoothly, repair or replace it.

It could be the speedo head itself. The grease inside could be drying out and hard. Had that problem on my 32, not sure about your 41 so perhaps someone with experience in that year could advise.

The speedo in my '54 truck made an "urk, urk, urk" sound. I pulled it, removed the little brass cup near the cable connection <CLICK>, and oiled the felt wipe with a few drops of 3-in-one 20W oil. "Urk, urk, urk" gone.

See the section titled "Starting back at the base of the speedometer assembly" in this tech tip. Also shows how to lube and refurbish the entire speedo/odo.

Thanks Jeff, I'll give that a try. The site also will be helpful if I try to rebuild a non-working one.
