Hello All!

When the PO of my 41 Special Deluxe rebuilt the tranny, he told me he wasn't able to find new synchronizers so double clutching was needed when shifting, and it shifts smooth doing this, however I would like to complete the rebuild.

If I slow down to make a turn, and shift into second gear, I have to get really slowed down so I don't rake the gear.

So was wondering if anyone knows of a source for new synchronizers.

Thanks!

Kevin

You could make a post in the parts wanted section.

I purchased synchronizer cones for my '41 from The Filling Station.

Hi Sid,

How are your synchronizer working out? I think you glued your cones in place? I wonder how they will hold up, and if you might comment on how many miles you have on them, and the condition of the transmission in general? Are you double clutching? Is your vacuum assist working well, etc.. Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,

I guess I didn't think about looking for the rings at the Filling Station.

I see that they have to be pressed in.

Thanks!!

After replacing the synchronizer cones my '41 shifts nicely. I've driven it about 300 miles since then (200 last Saturday), and it shifts smoothly, and no double clutching is needed, even when downshifting into 2nd. Notice I said cones. The rings ride on the cones, and the cones in my trans were the only worn parts. When looking for parts for that job I did not find anyone re-producing the rings, only the cones. One of the new cones I purchased was slightly over-size and could not be used. It caused the ring to lock up. We used the better of the 2 old cones and put it on 3rd gear. It works fine that way. Thanks again for your help Mike.

Hi Kevin,
Last April there was a lot of discussion on the Mr. Goodwrench chat site about synchronizer issues. It seems that to get an over view of what you need to do you should review the last year of posts on transmission issues discussed in our Forums. You can do this by doing an Advanced search under the word "transmission." Fill in "Display Name Search" using the name Mike Buller, or Sid, or Andre. The "Date Range" should be newer than "1 year" and older than "1 month." This will give you a good discussion of synchronizer issues. Personally, I have never had a synchronizer problem down shifting? It may be your transmission linkage is out of adjustment?

I may be of more help once you formulate what you want to do next. I have a couple hours of DVDs I shot disassembling my transmission. They are not edited so must be watched entirely through to get things explained in the right sequence. Sid, and Andre, rebuilt their transmissions in the Spring.

Good luck, Mike
