OK... Bought a coupe that the door latches/locks worked fine, except someone had left off the rod to the pull knob.
After a couple months searching my barn I found a pair of 37 door latch/lock assemblies complete with the missing rods! Pays to be a pack rat!
Took out the coupes assembly on one side, installed the missing pull rod and everything is fine (pull/push and all parts move correctly) until I reinstall the exterior handle...
Then the rod wont pull or push ...
Whats happening?
Is there some secret Im not seeing?

Everything seems fine with assembly mounted in bench vice. Lock or unlock with key or interior pull rod.
But once installed in car someting is amiss.
The ferrel in the door is not tight... is this critical to align the center if the handle shaft??
Is there an easy way to tighten the ferrel... this is a complete driving car not a project... so theres glass in the door which makes it hard to get to the inside of the ferrel....

There's a specialty tool for putting the ferrule in. All of the vendors sell them. If the latch is working on the bench but not in the car there's something binding. Without being there to see what's going on I have no idea. Good luck with it. It's likely something minor.

Ive seen those tools.. but theres tons of post of people saying they dont work too good...
Is a tight ferrel criticial to hold the shafts center?
Thats all I can think of... as key or pull rod work fine on bench... only thing I cant simulate is the ferrel...

I had the same problem on my 36. I had to keep playing with It until It was aligned properly and did not bind up. The tool that imprints the ferrule isn't the greatest, but I don't know of an alternative tool. It will bind If the ferrule Is not somewhat tight and centered. I think FS rents them. Richard

Ive seen guys suggest pulling a lug nut inside with a bolt to spread or pin the ferrel.
Beginning to think the handle center line must be close or there are issues.

Well made a tool ... and it was a bit too small... pulled through the ferrel instead of crimping the back side and pulled the ferrel out...
At least I was able to clean up the paint over spray...LOL
Decided this cant be so hard...
Got out my tin snips and cut the back edge in 10 places... Put ferrel back in and was able to to bend down all the created flips.. its tight now! And unless you pull the doors interior panel no one will ever know!
Will re-install the assembley and handle after lunch!

RESOLVED! In case anyone with a simular issue finds this someday.. here was my answer...
The handle itself... It locked and unlocked the door fine. But its internal pin that moves at the tip.. didnt spring back like an original. Sure looks exactly like a 37! Guess this is why the builder didnt install that interior pull rod... Installed a proper locking door handle and now it works as original. Lock, unlock from inside and out no conflicts!
