I'm going to change the rear axel seal's to the new lip seal type and would like to know the best place is to install a vent for the rear end. I have a vent assy. from a Mack truck that is a 1/8 pipe thread and will work just great. I tried a search and came up with nothing.

I believe he is referring to what I would call the axle housing aka "banjo housing". When I took my 51 rear axle out I found that the housing had a breather that is identical to the Mack one. It is located about 1/2 way between the differential center and the left rear wheel.

I assume this 3rd member term comes from the old mechanics referring to the Engine as first member, trasnsmission as second and rearend as 3rd member of the drivetrain. Of course on todays front wheel drive cars I don't know if the terms are used anymore.

Is it possible to install a vent on the differential cover? I need to replace the gasket and would take the opportunity to install a vent at that time. Thanks

After replacing inner and outer seals plus double sealed bearings on my 31, I took advice from another member and drilled a 1/4" hole in top diff cover bolt
and than drove it for about 50 miles and checked for leak. Nary a drop of rear end grease to be seen from that 1/4" hole. The temp that day was right at 95 and I ran it between 40 and 45. Hope my luck continues with rear end repairs.

Whoops -- Belay that -- I meant a 1/8" hole - not a 1/4" in hole. Sorry about that!!
