I'm still shopping for a '65 Impala. Hoped to find a low mileage "conservative" one with a 283CI, Power Glide, etc.
Now have located one with 32K original miles. Well documented, extremely clean, etc. It's a 3 speed stick, but with a 327 300HP engine. I'm tempted but would appreciate comments re the 300HP. Car would be used primarily for short runs, car shows, etc. I'm aware of the possible need for Premium fuel. But, are there other potential problems with this engine vs the 283? Thanks.

go for the 327/300 hp. its not a domed piston engine like the solid lifter small block chevys in 65( ie, the 365 and 375 HP sbcs of '65). the only significant difference between the 283 and the 327/300 is the later has considerably more ZIP. mike

The 300 HP would be my first choice. Fuel milage would equal a 283 but preimum gas MAY be necessary. Same cam as a 283 and 250 HP 327 so it is smooth running, With the larger intake valves, carburetor and exhaust system develops a lot of "fun" power.

I have the 327ci/300hp in my '66 Corvette. Love it.

I use the mid-grade gasoline. No need for Premium as long as it's tuned properly.

And, yes, it has great PERFORMANCE!!!

My 1965 SS came with the 250 hp 327, it is basically the same as the 300 Hp version. They both have double hump fuelie heads,
The cam is a little bigger in the 300 HP, The intake manifold is different to suit a Carter Carb AFB on the 300HP. and the exhaust manifolds are also a slightly bigger inside diameter.

Compession is the same on 250 and 300HP 327

The 250 HP had a 4GC carb which went well , but flooded when I stopped anywhere, even after rebuild, so I have installed the correct 300hp manifold with an AFB carter , can't wait to see how it goes.

The 300 HP used the same cam as a 250 hp and that cam was also used ia a 283 form 1957-1966 except 1960-1962 2 barrel engines.

Yes , I just checked my manual. the 350hp and 365 hp options in the chevelle and corvettes had the slightly higher lift on the cam lobes.
