I need the rear wheel oil seal part number clarified. My parts book, group 5.822, says the part is 3656817. However, I can't find that; instead, I've found 3663166 on GMPartsWiki and some parts vendors, so I suppose they renumbered it. There is a Trostel T5704 that says it replaces the 3663166; is that one a good fit? I also found a National 5704 that replaces a 472588 (unclear whose # that last one is). Most of these cover Chevy passenger cars from 33--54, so with that in mind, I found a Federal Mogul/National seal, using National #450666. The seller said it cross-references to Chicago Rawhide 15557, but then says it fits only 1946 to 1954 Chevy cars, which would leave me out. Is that one OK? Rockauto has a National 450666, for a 46 Chevy Fleetline. That is not my car, but again, it falls into that 1933--1954 range that does include the good old 38 Master. The Rockauto has the best price. Will that National 450666 work in a 38 Master?

If it were me, I would take measurements and go to my local bearing distributor.

That would be best, but I can't do that. I am just putting together parts for later, in case I need them. So I can't very well take things off of the car and go to the parts store.

Thanks, Tiny, I think I'll stick with that number, or an aftermarket clone of that one. But I can buy 2 of these on ebay for what Chevs 40s wants for one.

FWIW For seals, bearings, brakes (and a lot of other stuff) try NAPA and other local parts stores - - particlarly when you have a part number. Seals and bearings typically fit numerous applications and are still current numbers in many cases - and, yes, are much cheaper!

If it were me I would go to a NAPA store and order a seal for a 1954....to eleminate some confusion. From when the seal was first used on a 1933 Standard until last use in 1954 there were several changes (improvements) made. At one time it had a leather lip and then chaned to more modern neoprene. Chevrolet did not make its own seals They were purchased mainly from Chicago Rawhide and Victor.

That explains why I found Chicago Rawhide in my searches. As usual, I appreciate your adding your knowledge and applying it to the task at hand. Thanks, Gene.
