Hello Everyone,

Acquired a '37 car grill from another member that is in overall good condition but would like to clean up surface rust on the face and possibly try to paint the sides of the individual grills.

Any advice would be great.

Hey Dave, Just went through this last summer. I don't know how much rust you have on it, but mine had a fair amount. I took my dremel tool, with the wire brush attachment, and went around and in-between the long grill bars. I Know--It's alot of tedious work, but it turned out good. I taped the shiny ends of the grill bars and sprayed with a satin black metal paint. Hope this helps. PS, this was done while the grill was out of the car.

Hello Joe,

The face of the grill bars have a small amount of surface rust and the paint on the sides is dull. I know it will be a tedious job but the car is laid up until I reassemble the engine. I did plan to paint the sides but wasn't sure of the technique to use. Did you use pin strippers tape on the face of the bars ??
So I thought I would attempt to "polish" the face of the bars. What did you use ?? The wire brush and hand polish or is there a polishing wheel for the dremel tool ??

Dave:
Here is a link to some photos and a description of how I completed the same task a few years ago.
Good Luck!

Thanks Everyone,

Aside from engine and plumbing work, this will be the "winter" part of project.

Periodicly I have to touch my grill up, too. For the rust on the flat part of the grill, I use the finest steel wool they make and with some chrome polish go up and down each bar. I work each vertical bar until it looks good. I then lay the grille on some saw horses and paint the back of the bars, inside of the bars and the sides of the bars with black paint. Next, I flip it over and use a soft rag and with small amounts of lacquer thinner, I wipe the face of the bars down back to the chrome finish. Always looks good.

Hi Dave, sorry I didn't answer sooner. Looks like you have some good answers here on, "How To". Yes,I did use pin strippers tape on the bar face. But only after I used 0000 steel wool with chrome polish first. I then used the wire brush, that fit the dremel tool, and went in-between the bars with it. Then wiped it down good with paint thinner and painted with Rustolium satin black, Joe.

Thanks Joe,

Both you and 6cylinderovertx gave me the info I was looking for. I'll be printing this thread and putting in my "How to Folder".

Thanks again to Everyone.
