Hi everyone
I'm looking for info on my starter it is a Delco-Remy and the model says 704 L or I . The problem I have is that the spring has broke in many parts and I bought one part no.809690 Is it the good part number with the good starter number ? I believe maybe the bendix would have been change for a bigger one ? I have ten teeth on the gear what I believe is what it should be. My old spring is exactly inside 1 7/16 inches outside 2 1/8 inches and bore size for bolt is 7/16

.. Anyone as a info who would help me.

Here my truck

Hi Nic,
I believe the starter motor model number should be 714-L (might be miss stamp )
and the bendix spring part number you have quoted is also correct.

There are 2 types of bendix spring you may come across. One is a "light duty" type,in which the width of the spring steel strip is 5/16",whereas the "heavy duty" spring has the 3/8" wide steel strip. Both springs regardless of being light or heavy duty have "eyes" that will take 5/16" diameter bendix bolts. You'll need to determine the width of the spring steel,as the bendix bolts for either type differ in length because of the difference in spring steel width. The pinion gear that meshes with the flywheel ring gear has 10 teeth, and is exactly the same as a 4 cylinder 10 tooth gear from 1925-1928.

All of the above is great information that should help you with your starter Bendix drive.

By the way, since you are no longer new to Chevy Chatter you might want to post your questions in the 1929-32 forum.

Good luck with your project!
