My car has been switched over to a small block chevy before I bought it. My question is there are no radiator support rods from the front to the firewall. Should I find some and install them or not worry? If so can someone post a picture of the proper mounting locations? I have been looking on the net and can't find any good pictures of both ends.

Also I have an oval slot in the upper middle of the firewall with a screw hole on each side of the slot does anyone know what that was for or what went there I want to put a plate over that area to close it off or find what should be there and put it back.
Thanks for your help.

The support rod just uses double nut and washer connection at the firewall end and has two holes on the front to connect to the radiator frame; which you may not have with your conversion. It probably wouldn't be difficult to make one if you want to get a rod and install it.

The hole with the two screw holes should have a metal cover over a grommet with three holes in it. You could run any wires you want through them just to make it look useful.

This kind of shows what you're needing. I used to see the "V" rods on ebay fairly often but I haven't for a while. It supports the core support. I think it's necessary. The oval hole you refer to is for choke cable, hand throttle cable, engine temp & oil pressure tubes. You can get new grommets and clamps at Chevs of the 40s and The Fillings Station it needs a metal retainer that neither shows. I see them on ebay on occasion.

The radiator support rods enable you to manipulate the position of the radiator surround so the hood (bonnet in Australia) sits right. I am surprised that the hood gaps are right without it
