You can't get the shaft out of the hole in the decklid? I don't know the differences between the '39 and my '38, if any, but mine pulls right out after the nut is removed. I'll look and see if I have any pictures showing the handle out of the decklid.

Yes, even my lock smith said if ANYTTHING you might need to turn it left or right, but it should come straight out. the handle doesn`t twist because it`s in the locked position,
but wondering if because it is locked, if the locking pin is holding it in place?
maybe take the whole decklid to the locksmith?

Mine got accidentally locked and I discovered the key I had didn't work. I found a body shop with a ring of GM keys and fortunately one of them was right for mine. You might check with some old timer locksmiths and body shops to see if any of them have a set of GM keys. They came in a big ring with probably a hundred keys on it. I used to see them all the time but haven't seen a set in a long time.

I had the same problem on my '38. What I ended up doing was just taking the whole deck lid to my locksmith and they ended up making me a key for it. Took them about an hour and $25 of my money. Any decent locksmith should be able to do this given they have or can obtain the blanks.

Some locksmith may still have a Master Key for older Chevys. Call around and see.

In the mid '50's a buddy had such a key for his '47 Chevy. That key would unlock and start every Chevy in the parking lot! So, I know Master Keys existed.

that`s my next move is just take the whole decklid, on my other 39, the glove box lock works the decklid, and the door lock works the ignition, had my black 39 in storage, so checked on that over the weekend, i`m bringing the lid plus some of my own blanks just in case.
thanks guys for all the ideas
