My 40's finally running, but now have a loud "thump" coming from the U-joint housing. I had the transmission out recently to replace the clutch and am wondering if I have reassembled everything correctly. The service manual does not clearly identify right and wrong ways of assembling the u -joint.

I removed the bell housing, and notice a lot of "slop" in the trunion as the drive shaft is turned. The bearings seem to be ok, but the trunion slips nearly 1/2 inch up & down (End play?) Is this normal?

I noticed that I didn't have too much grease spill when I removed the bell. When I assembled the U-joint originally I tried to fill It thru the speedometer gear, but didn't really seem to get too much in. Could that be part of the problem?

Any guidance/suggestions would be appreciated.

For a better response, you also might want to post your question in the 1937-42 forum.

Good luck!

Thanks, Thought I had posted it there. Am still trying to figure out how to navigate the website. Will try again.
