Points off or Not ??
I've had the pleasure of owning a couple of cool old Chevy's including a 41 Coupe. I have also had the pleasure of being an "assistant" judge at several VCCA events with Larry W. & Carmine P. including a national event.
During my time in VCCA I've helped judge 1940-1948 chevy's and feel comfortable doing so. But the conversation turned to "oil filters" {The type strapped to the manifolds}.
As I understand the VCCA "rules" as "The car must look like the day it rolled off the assembly line." Which means, there were no oil filters installed {?} as they were "dealer options or dealer installations." And I have NOT seen Oil filters in 1940 or 41 Accessory books.
What's the common view in judgeing Oil Filters on {1940-48} cars ? Take points off or let it go....
Thanks,

The oil filter was not an accessory. It was considered a "part" by Chevrolet. As an example an oil filter in the 1941 parts book was in group 1.836, part # 1503611 and sold for $6.50 (plus installation). Its application is 1937-1941 however the 1937-38 unit was not the same. Back in the pre-war years most of the filters mounted on the firewall rather than the intake manifold. The filter also must be of the AC brand....and AC had several different models for a Chevrolet back then. If manifold mounted it is mounted in the center of the manifold with a band around it. Say in 1950 if you purchased a new AC oil filter for a 1941 Chevrolet you got a 1950 filter which is quite different looking. In my opinion I would not take of points if the filter is close to what I described above.

As always, Thanks Gene & Chev-Chief.
Chev-Chief, I've read Pat's review several times and talked to him on the phone a couple of times. He has assembled an amazing amount of information. I have even shared copies of Pat's review with other Chevy owners, as the question about Oil Filters comes up often.
The only time I considered taking points away from a 1942 Chevy in regards to an Oil Filter was when the Oil Filter was crome plated, as were several eng. parts. So I just made note of those, the RED spark plug wires, Red Coil and Polished brass Radiator then took points off. But it was a nice car.
Enjoy, MW

The 48 has a special bracket which attaches it to the manifold, the 49 has the bracket welded to the canister making them very different, point deduction should be considered..Sorry guys, just my 2 cents

While tthe list of AC filters he shows is impressive very few of the ones pictured were offered by Chevrolet. AC had a lot of different filter applications before WWII but not all would be correct. When I called attention to him that the 1949 and up factory installed filters were painted black he had no knowledge of that.
