Good Saturday morning all!

My 41 Special Deluxe has the heater/motor under the seat on passenger side. The P/O never hooked the motor up after rebuilding the car and told me he only drove the car in the summer.

Well, I want to drive it in the winter on good days so I want heat!

Today after mowing I decided to remove the seat and the motor and hook it up and see if it worked.

Well it didn't so I took the motor apart to check things inside and it looks pretty good inside and the brushes are in good shape.

I cleaned things up with some fine emery cloth, lubed the shaft (top and bottom), and put it back together and it still don't work so I am looking for a replacement motor, 12V.

Hoping someone has replaced theirs and can tell me which one they got. I know both the Filling Station and Chevs of the 40's has motors, but want to ensure I get the right one.

Also, I see there is a hole next to the motor in the floor pan, so I assume the motor wires run out and under the floor and up to the firewall.

Hoping someone can tell me how they wired their motor & control switch up.

Thanks a lot!!

Hey Frank, how are you?

Yeah, I believe I was grounding it ok, but never hurts to check it again. I can always have the motor rebuilt at a local rebuilder and that may be the route I take. Just wondering how it wires up.

Since the motor has 2 short wires with connectors, and has to run out the floor pan and up to the front, I am wondering what the motor hooks to under the seat, prior to running outside.

Thanks

So no one on this forum has ever replaced or wired up an under seat heater motor?

You probably scared off any help with the mention of 12-volt.

That is funny, but at this point, I would just like to know how the original 6V motor wires up to both the power and control switch.

Got the motor a good ground and it works. A little noisy, but works.

The wire from the motor went to the switch. A hot wire ran from the ign. switch to the heater switch. It was wired so the heater motor would not work when the key was off. The motor was grounded to the car/heater case.

Thank you Chevgene.

So here's what I am still a little fuzzy in. The wires come out near the shaft, so I assume that's why the GM ran them though the hole in the floor pan, so they wouldn't interfere with the fan blades, so they must run under the floor pan, up the firewall, and inside the car over on the drivers side.

Still fuzzy on one more thing. Since the wires coming out of the motor are only 2 or 3" long and have connectors on them, what did they connect to, before making their run to the headlight switch?

You keep referring to '2' wires coming from the motor and out under the floorpan. I rewired my '47 about 14 yrs ago. One motor wire is grounded inside the heater the other one after exiting under the pan follows the frame to the firewall ,enters the FW through a grommet and connects to the heater SW on the opposite end of the rheostat from the power wire. I live just to the south of you so yes a heater doesn't get used much but the underseat type really heats things up! Dan

Thank you SO MUCH Chef-Chevy!!

I knew the 2 wires had to connect to something before going out the car and to the firewall, but didn't know what.

Thank you very much for answering my mystery!!!

No, I don't have a new harness, but I can certainly make one. What is the connector the 2 wires off the motor connect to? Can you get it somewhere?

If you mean the fan motor,1 is a ground and other goes to the switch...You can get a harness from chevs of the 40s or the filling station I would suggest you go that direction and you will know they are correct...I wasted many years doing my own thing, and spent many more making it all correct

No, the connector the 2 wires are screwed into then the hot comes off it and goes down through the floor.

It looks like a terminal board.

I get yah,As I remember it is just an insulator..You could probably get by with grounding the heater elsewhere and spice the heater lead to the harness???
