Has anyone got any diagrams or pictures of the brake setup for the 1930 Sedan?

We are struggling to figure out whether or not the return spring is correct or not.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Hi Dan,

Here is the brake layout from the 1930 Owner's manual:

http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyowner/30om31.htm

For the service brake, one end is hooked to a tab attached to the service brake pull rod, the other end is hooked through a hole in a cross member brace just forward of the front of the rear leaf spring mount.

Happy Motoring,

Dan

Hi

It is a close up of the setup on the actual back plates on the wheels to see what the spring is like the helps the pistons return.

Hello D_P,
I don't know about pistons being used for the 1930 brake system. I believe that they are mechanical cams that operate the brake shoes. Anyway, to see the shoes and springs assemblies, try this:
1. Go back to DanR's post again
2. Click onto the link to the 1930 manual again
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page
4. Select (1930 OM index)
5. Under (brakes) select page 30
You should see a figure of the rear brake hub assembly with emergency brake shoes. I don't know where a figure of the front brake assembly can be found, someone else may know.

Hi Dan,

The front mechanical brake assembly on a 1930 is the same as the rear without the emergency brakes. Hydraulic brakes were not used on Chevs until 1936. Sounds like a previous owner may have "upgraded" the original braking system on your car. Here is a link to the 1935 Service News which shows the 1936 brake set up:

Perhaps this is what you have installed on your car, hope it helps.

Happy Motoring,

Dan

As Dan mentioned above, Chevrolet had mechanical brakes until 1936 when hydraulic brakes were introduced on the new 1936 models. Prior to that all Chevrolets had mechanical brakes, including 1930. If your 1930 has hydraulic brakes then that is an upgrade that was done to the car by someone decades later.

As a suggestion, and for additional help to you when working on your car, you might want to purchase a 1930 Owner's Manual, the complete set of the 1930 Chevrolet Service News (12 issues), a 1930 Repair Manual and the 1929-32 Chevrolet parts book. All of the above are available in reprint from the Filling Station in Lebanon, Oregon. www.fillingstation.com

Good luck!
