My vacuum shift canister has two hoses going to it. One is for vacuum from the intake. What is the other hose for?

:iagree That's the one that goes over to a filter attached to the chassis. There it is relatively isolated from all the oil a-drippin' and flying around everywheres else. Is too! Charlie

A quick check of your manual indicates as such...Saw a NOS one for your car on eBay, a while back...Sat there for weeks...Surprised me that no one was that interested in it..They were asking a fair price for it, too.

If the vacuum shift was the thing at its time.( mine still works great. no problems ). why did Chevy discontinue it? was it about how the transmissions were built at that time? kinda make you wonder.

They could be more trouble than they were worth. While they had some advantages the conventional shift felt more positive. The probably saved $10 per car by eleminatining it. That would have amounted to a $10,000,000 savings in 1949 alone. With an automatic transmission coming in 1950 may have had some influence on it also.

thanks gene, I thought that the automatic transmission had something to do with it. $10,000,000 was quite a bit of money back then.
