Now that I have a fresh start. What is the general recommendation on Oil Grade to use ? A straight 30W or a muti-grade 10W-30 or ?
Thanks, Wes

Wes,
10-30.
FYI, this subject (multi grade vs single weight and also detergenet vs non-detergent) has been discussed here quite a bit. A 'search' should provide you with quite a bit of additional info - if you care to check it out.....
Bill.

O Kepi: I can't believe this is what you intended on your "click here" post.....    Your search did not return any results. At least that's what happened when I "clicked here." Bill.

Maybe just a bad choice for a key word in the search. Try motor oil etc. and also you need to choose which forum(s) to search, try "all open forums".Here is a thread you may need to look at. motor oil, detergent or not By the way, sometimes we may get off the subject once in a while, then someone jerks our chain.

bill, sorry...I ran a search of all forums using the parameter "detergent" and it located many of our previous discussions about oil viscosities & qualities...guess a link to a search result page doesn't quite work the way I had hoped... epi

Hey O Kepi,
Not a 'problem.'
I was just surprised to see "your search didn't produce any results" or whatever it 'said' and I thought I should give you a "head's up" on the situation......
Like you said, I guess it didn't work the way you thought it would.

Gene was right,as usual, and I can't believe you guy's are still debating the single grade vs multi-grade oil. Think about it. The oils that are available now are so superior to those that were available back in the 30's or 40's, there's no contest. Just make sure you change it every 1,000 miles or less, 'cause those old guy's didn't have no oil filters.

I have also just rebuilt my 216 in my 1940 town sedan- New rings, one NOS connecting rod ,rebuilt head, complete gasket set. Have not yet put back in car or started. I am getting strong recommendations from my motorhead buds to start and continue with a synthetic oil. I know many new cars will void warranty if you do not use a synthetic oil. Any thoughts on this on a complete rebuild? Thanks, as alway. Chevy40

Synthetic oils are great for extreem use such as very high or low temps....but really not necessary for the old cars. The additive package in 10W-30 makes it 300% better than oils from 50 years ago.
#20 oil was recommended by Chevrolet in the pre 10W-30 years with #10 for winter.#30 was only recommended for extreem hot weather...Good old 10W-30 covers all the bases.

Yeah, I think I"ll apply the K I S S principle---and that doesn't mean " keep it synthetic, stupid! " Thanks, Chevy40
