Have any of you used the POR 15? Ive been thinking of using it on the frame of the 37.
Any experience or thoughts on this ?

You will receive a strong recommendation not to use any of that line of products. Not allowed in my shop.

Up here in the "Way North" we do need a good product to use due to our quick climate changes.

Sure hate to do all that work and shortly there after have the "Ol Enemy of Rust" take over..

So what would you recommend instead? Is the Eastwood Rust Encapsulator any better?

You have several choices but I would recommend media blasting your frame first and then coating it with an excellent epoxy primer. Then you can top coat the frame with a quality automotive paint such as acrylic enamel from PPG, RM or other manufacturers of automotive paint products. laugh laugh laugh

Junk Yard Dog! Thanks Very Kindly! Media Blasting is in the schedule shortly.. thats what many have
suggested over here too .. is to epoxy prime then paint. PPG is quite popular here as well.

Agrin Best Wishes to you All

I have had good results with POR15 on a frame that needed to be sandblasted but didn't get done, wire brushed the loose rust off and put the POR15 on with a spray gun. It has not had any rust after 6 years of being driven in all type of weather, rain and muddy roads. POR15 is not for the faint of heart. It has a very short shelf life and if it drys on an area that you don't want it on it is a real problem. My friends in the rust belt use it a lot on rust buckets they restore with patch panels, and donor car floors and trunks that are welded in and no facilitys for sandblasting, several use POR15 on these repaired areas. I think that you have the means and money to do a frame off 1st rate shop show restoration that is much better than doing the POR15 bit, but POR15 does have some applications for the less affluent part time fixer uppers.

Mr Mack, There is a cure for short shelf life when using Por 15.
Never open the lid, punch two small holes in the lid and pour the amount needed at the time of use in another container. When finished shoot screws in the holes to seal the can and place in the refrig. This way the brush will not contaminate the paint. If you need to use more paint remove the screws and use the same procedure as above.
I will not comment on the pros and cons of Por 15 since that has been covered before.

If I would have done a frame off and blasted my frame I would have never used POR 15 but did neither.I cleaned the frame well and used it with no rust yet...I do not recommend the product but have no reason "TO DATE"to disclaim its rust proffing abilities. It is very hard to work with though but if sprayed and top coated looks quite good,chef- chevy

I`ve had excellent results with POR15 on my frame which I media blasted first then spray painted. I have received compliments on my undercarriage. It can be difficult working with. Don`t and I repeat "Don`t get any on your skin and let it dry or you`ll be wearing it around for quite sometime. Also, it is not very UV friendly, but has worked out fine on the frame since the sun doesn`t bother it there. I also keep it in the frig once it`s been opened. Instead of just putting the lid on after use I put suran wrap between the lid and can otherwise you`re gonna need a cold chisel to get the lid off.

Speaking of toxic, anyone ever use Phosporic Acid (component of many Rust removers) or Methyl Chloride (Paint Remover) Quartz sand for sandblasting,or epoxy hardner, and fiber glass resin or unleaded gasoline, Lead? Now there are some more highly toxic substances!
I left out one of the baddest ones that endanger our pets (dogs and cats) Antifreeze made from Ethylene Glycol.

I buy it at the Dollar store for a dollar a bottle it does a pretty good job on greasy and nasty parts. Now if I could just find a good cheap solvent for my 20 gallon parts washer. The stuff at Tractor Supply is fairly good but it is $20 for a 5 gallon bucket. Unleaded is good but the fire danger is more than I am willing to face.

For my parts washer I use a commercial cleaning solvent, and I purchase it by the 55 gallon drum. My parts washer holds about 20 gallons and a drum of this commercial cleaning solvent usually lasts me a minimum of 10 to 12 years...if not longer! yipp wink laugh laugh

I was using Safetykleen service but it is too expensive for my hobby shop and too much of a hastle out here in Poverty Flats.
