Just got my car (1931 with '30 tranny) on road after it has sat for most of 45 years or more. Had it around the neighborhood last year for 3-4 miles without an issue. In a 2 mile run yesterday, twice it jumped out of second gear, both times under power going up hill. Just getting used to driving this old girl, but want to make sure if there is a straightforward fix for this I'll do it now. I have restored a lot on the car, but the tranny/clutch etc has never been touched by me, other than fresh 600W there and in UJoint/Rearend. Car is running a little rough (not tuned up yet), so that may cause abnormal amount of chassis vibration. Any thoughts?

Hello Gunsmoke, I'm not all that knowledgable on transmission shifting linkage, but from doing google searches on (popping out of gear), it seems the common thought is a worn shifting fork either not engaging the gears fully or having enough play to not keep the gears in proper position. It would appear that removal of the shifter and fork and gear inspection are required. When you drive on a level road under normal acceleration, does the shifter vibrate excessively? It may indicate play between shifter and fork assembly. You might get through the driving season this year by holding pressure on the shifter while you are driving. That may require you to install a knob on the steering wheel to help in steering one handed. I'll be interested to know what you learn. Good Luck

Thanks Harry, I will be doing some further sleuthing and will probably wait unti winter to remove cover and check things out. In meantime I will see if I can live with it for now.
