Can someone tell me if this is the proper way to put the manifolds on my 235? I'm sure that I read somewhere that you should torque the intake and exhaust together in the center off of the car and then install them as a set with the bolt/clamps on the middle connections to the head and the nuts on the studs on the two end connections.

Well, not sure.

But I do believe it is good to mount the set together and then have them planed at the machine shop. That way they will mate up nice and flush to the head. Exhaust leaks can be a troublesome thing with these old intake and exhaust manifolds.

I recommend doing the above.

I would recommend leaving the exhaust to intake connection loose, bolt the intake/exhaust to the head, then tighten the intake to exhaust bolts. This way, both manifolds will stand a better chance of sealing at the head.
