Anyone know what guage the wire from the starter to the ammeter is? It is not included in my NOS harness. It appears to power everything but the starter so it must be a heavy guage??
Thanks, Mike

I would use 10 gage red cloth wrapped wire. Don't know where you got your harness, but that wire is normally included.

Actually it's a very old NORS harness I bought on ebay. It's nice quality but they left that wire out.
Thanks for the help. Mike

The primary lead on a 1940 is #8 wire and black cloth covered. I got that information and the part from Gene at YnZ\'s Yesterday\'s Parts

The other 39s I have seen have a black wire as well. I just bought a pile of elevator wire for next to nothing and it is almost exactly like that used on old chev harnesses.

The 1939 wiring diagram does not list gauge or color-the 1942 lists black for color but no gauge. The 1949 lists 10 for gauge.I would say the 1939 had a black 10 gauge wire.I don't recall Chevrolet using 8 ga. in any location but the heavier wire would cause no problem...and as long as its black its OK with me. My '39 has a dark yellow wire (replacement?) and has never cost me any points in judging. The original wire on my '50 is black cloth covered.
