When I go downhill with the car in gear, there are repeated big bangs that sound like they're coming from the right side of the engine. I tightened the home-made rear motor mounts a bit but that doesn't help. If it were backfiring, I would expect that to be on the carb/exhaust side. To my untrained ear it sounds like the engine lifts and drops and something is going to get torn up. Thankfully the new brake job works well enough that I don't need engine braking.
I've sent my spare original motor mounts in for re-vulcanizing and ordered a new front motor mount. This is getting worse since I've put a few hundred miles on the car this summer.
Thoughts?
Thanks! Mark

When you get your new motor mounts back install them and see if the noise goes away. If not, then look elsewhere for the problem. By the way, did you get your transmission mount re-vulcanized as well?

There's a transmission mount? I went to look and indeed there are two thick rubber pads, similar to the homemade engine mounts. It looks like I have one on my spare transmission that I can revulcanize.
So I found that one of the bolts on the transmission mount was loose, about 1/8" visible! I tighten that bad boy up, take it for a test spin and the racket is worse than ever! Just driving down the road, let off the gas and it sounds like Clyde's Tommy Gun, rat-a-tat-tat.
Apparently I'm getting closer to the problem. Maybe the front mounts are loose too? Can it be that easy? What now?

Not to hijack this thread but dose anyone know how thick the rubber is on the rear trans mount on a 32?

After you install the new motor and transmission mounts hopefully the noises that you are hearing will be gone. By the way, don't forget that the front motor mount goes UNDER the front cross member and not on top.

Have you checked your universal joint for play. It could also be the bushing in the front of the rear end tourque tube.Remove the four bolts where the ball end fits into the rear of the trany. slide this back and see how much side to side movement is in the bushing .There should only be .005-.010 inch movement. You should also jack the car up put it in gear an move the rear wheels back and forth. You might need a second person to stop the other rear wheel from turning backwards.
