What color(s) should a 41 accessory oil filter be to be correct??

I'm speaking of a 1941 passenger car oil filter from Chevy/GM/the dealer. I presume these oil filters were a "dealer install" accessory. Passenger cars didn't come from the factory with an oil filter, did they??

Regarding the 'correct' colors: would the color(s) be the same for all 1941-1948 "car" applications??

Also, what about the color(s) for an 'after market' oil filter for those same years??

Thnx!!

Bill.

The oil filter was not offered as an accessory in 1941 but could be purchased as a part thru the Chevrolet Parts Dept. or purchased from any AC distributor. The filter was painted a light gray color with a yellow and black decal on the side. The mounting bracket attached to the outter carburetor stud and the two bolts that fasten the intake and exhaust manifolds together,A band fastened the body of the filter to the bracket-this arrangement positioned the filter to the center of the manifold.

This type of mounting was used thru 1942 from what I can find. After WWII the more common clamp-on with U bolt filter was used and the dealer installed unit was yellow and black. If the filter was ordered from the factory as an option it was all black.

The Fram is common after market filter but not a product of GM /AC.There were at least a dozen more brands made to fit a Chevrolet.

Hello 42Bill
My AC Oil Filter literature from 1940 shows the correct Chevrolet filter as an L-1 or an L-4. I have several original L-4's and L-1's. If you send me an SASE, I will send you a paint chip from the local house paint store with as close to original color of gray that I can find.
