I'm taking the engine and transmission out of my '51 Styleline parts car. I'm trying to find out how much the transmission weighs. I've got the front clip off and not sure if I want to take the engine and transmission out together or if I should take the engine first then the transmission.
Thanks Don

The transmission crossmembers on those early powerglide cars was attached to the frame rails with big rivits, making transmission removal quite different. The transmission can be removed by fashioning a lift of sorts that supports the transmission from the inside of the vehicle through an access panel in the floor. The transmission is then tilted out and onto the floor, without disturbing the crossmember. Pulling them both out together may be easier, however you're gonna be dealing with some considerable heft, I would estimate somwhere north of 800 pounds

I lifted mine out with a mid sized skid steer loader. Cast trans has to be 150 lbs plus.
My cross bar was retrofitted with bolts. But normally the cross bar was spot welded in and it needs to be chiseled out which makes the removal of both much easier.
