A lot of people tell me that the 216 valve cover was painted grey same as the block in 39' but factory photo shows it was actually black on the assembly line. Same color as the horn. Anyone confirm this?

Could you see the block in that picture? The grey looks black in reduced light situations. The engine was painted after the valve cover was installed, so even the gaskets are engine color, from what I understand.

George is correct. The engine was painted after it was assembled, so the edge of the gaskets, all of the fasteners, the valve cover and etc. were all painted engine color....dark blue-gray. laugh laugh laugh

agree with the dog. our 39 woodie's orginal engine, which i rebuilt about 5 years ago, had never had the valve cover or side cover off and the cork gaskets were dark gray-blue as dog mentions in his post. mike
