Back to the deep well of knowledge!!! I'm finally getting my car painted the original black (YEA!!!) and am asking for information on the pinstripping. I know there is one red stripe down the side and four stripes on each rim. Can anyone put up a picture of the rim stripes or describe them? Is the red color a basic "fire engine" red? Best wishes and thanks in advance! Chuck

Mike, I'm astonished!!! That site was exactly what I needed. I'm in the very same situation and have learned more from those pictures and descriptions than from anything else. I just took my '39 to the shop for the same restoration process and have had answered many of questions I've had over the years such as steering wheel restoration to name just one. The pictures are terrific and are worth a thousand words (the words have helped too) Thanks again Mike...I'll be looking at the pictures for a long time to come. PS I think the pinstripping is a bright red on a black body. Good luck with yours. Best wishes, Chuck

A black 1939 can have either red or ivory stripes-the wheel and body stripe will be the same color. The red is described as "Vermillion light".The body stripe is also about 1/8" wide.If the paint number is 251 it will have an Ivory strip-252 a red.
An early 1939 will have red stripes on the hood side mouldings and ivory on the late.

O K !! Chevy40 is going to take a perfectly good subject and muck it up. My 1940 Master Deluxe has five original rims on it and mine have three stripes- two just outside the chrome dish and one that intersects the valve stem hole. Were 39s differant from 40s in the wheel pinstripes? Also, my car has no body or hood stripes- were these optional? My car is Harbor Blue in color. What is the code and name of the trim color( almost a baby blue) Thanks in advance, Chevy40

Pinstripping wheels can become a highly complicated project, using all kinds of jigs fixtures templates etc. or as simple a job as jacking up a wheel and using a bucket upside down to steady the hand holding a brush or a Bugler stripping tool, while your helper slowly turns the subject tire and wheel. The simple approach was told to me by a Lone Star Region of VCCA something or other Emeritus. I saw some of his work, and it looks like some that was done back in 1927 when he was a young pup.

The wheel stripes on a 1940 are not the same as a 1939....the 1940-48 were the same. The wheel and body stripes for Harbor Blue were Blazon Blue- a light baby blue. Wheel stripes should all be 1/8" wide. There are two on the wheel hub and one on the rim...which is in the same location as a 1939.The body stripe is in the depression of the long belt moulding that is pressed into the hood, door and body sides. All Master 85's and Master DeLuxe had the stripe. The Special DeLuxe had a stainless moulding attached to the smooth body sides and no stripe. Only 97 degrees and high humidity here today-never went outside of the house.

I measured all my wheel stripes ( all five rims ) and no stripe is < 3/16" or >1/4" . Nothing is 1/8" I am also sure there was N E V E R a body stripe. Could this have been the standard at the Kansas City plant? Chevy40

By the way Chevgene or all other takers, I would benifit most from anyone who would consider personally taking their time to stop and look at a work-in-progress. An open invitation is extended to visit at 1-309-838-9634. I have an original car with no body pinstripes. Danvers is about 20 miles west of Bloomington Il. Thanks, Chevy40

Did I say N E V E R had body stripes? Open mouth insert foot. I did a very careful check of my car while taking a break from the carb and in two areas, rear pass door jamb and front pass door I found a small trace of Blazon Blue. I still find it hard to believe all 5 rims have 90% of trim paint on them and body has less than 2% trim paint on it. Any thought or open ridicule? Best to all Chevy40

I was just geting ready to type in --- all 1940's had a stripe---saved me the time.
Depending as to how the car was stored sometimes the wheel paint stood up better than the body. The wheels had a heavy coat of enamel and ditto on the stripes....The body stripe was always rather thin and would slowly weather/wash off
I was down thru your way in the end of May...went down to Tenn. to visit my son and family.Won't be going that way again as he is in the process of moving back to Wis.
