Hi This is greasemonkey123 I have a question. On a 216 do the valve push rods always rotate when the engin is running. I adgusted the valves and have them all turning but have a valve tap. Is it right to adjust the valves so there is no tap and the push rods not turn. I thought you take them down no clearnance then a half turn more. Any info greatly appreciated thanks

The 216 is a solid lifter engine. I set mine at .005 on intake and .008 on exhaust.

FWIW (and it ain't worth much!)
When these ol' 216's were common, I always heard it said of the valves, "If you can't hear 'em, you'll burn 'em". 'May or may not be true but it makes sense to me. The times I set 'em, I left 'em a bit loose and never regreted it.
That was in the mid 50's. I wasn't a mechanic then and I'm not one now! Just sharing very old experiences.

Some push rods may turn and some not. The lifter is set off set from the cam lobe. This causes the lifter to rotate. The spinning lifter casue the push rod to rotate most of the time. 216 valve settings are intake .006 to .008" and exhaust .013 to .015". I usually set my exhausts at .014" and have never burnt a valve. Make sure to have the engine completely warmed-up before adjusting. If the area on the rocker arm that contacts the valve stem is worn it will pinch the feeler and you will get a false reading.

I have a 48 Fleetmaster with her original 216 engine. The pushrods should rotate when the engine is running. I run my car on the interstate a fair amount - I set my valves loose with the clearance at the top of the range indicated in the shop manual - so I lessen the chances of burning a valve. Yes - my engine taps nicely at idle. IMO - if you can't hear them, they're too tight. Used the procedure I found on one of the antique Chevy truck sites to set my valves, and, she runs great.
