Numbers are starting to fall in line for an original drive train. Block castings 3837004 Date Code A 11 7 Head Casting 3836848. According to my research this is correct for a 1957 truck.

Is there a way to determine the plant the engine was from ?

The Truck was assembled in Tarrytown, NY Plate shows 3A57T

Any one have information on Transmission castings GM 19 38268478 Tail shaft GM 48 8373888 ? Manual 3 speed

Thanks, Steve

if the engine number that is stamped into the ledge on the block behind the distributor starts with an F the engine was made in Flint. If a T it was made in Tonawondo (spelling) NY.
If you would havehad the correct number for the differential I could have told you the year. The number posted was for a much later year so I didn't bother to look. That casting number was uesd from 1955-1959 I would suspect.

Thanks, the number begins with F. I thought I looked at all the numbers on the differential. Is there a specific location that I may have missed the numbers? The Block is Stamped

The actual rear end numbers that code the date and ratio are stamped into the center carrier. The exact location shold be in the front pages of the truck shop manual.

Thanks I'll go digging as I am trying to determine the ratio. I suspect it is very low. At 55 or 60 MPH we are tached pretty high.

Steve,

Here is the 1957 Chevrolet Truck Specifications Manual at the GM Heritage website.
WARNING: that is a link to a large file/download. However, it contains much useful information.
