Well 48heavychevy, I don't have a clue what it came off of either, BUT, I'll bet it should be turned 180 degrees to be mounted right.

so your saying that the open area needs to face the driver fender.

The open area should face the firewall. Here's a picture of a stock air cleaner on a 216. Look closely and you will see a raised portion in front of the copper mesh in the front only. The mesh is exposed toward the firewall. In fact if you zoom in on that raised portion, you will find that the word "front" is stamped into it to tell you how to install it.

So that's just my opinion on how your air cleaner should be mounted. I've been known to be wrong on many occasions togo.

Oh Ok I should have remembered that.The original that was on the car when I got it.But later I sold it,it went to Cali-for-nia.I do however have an original oil bath cleaner..not exactly sure what yr buy anywho,Like you said to each his own.Thanks for the pix.
