The 37-54 Master Parts book states 5/16" OD fuel line for all 38' and 39' Chev passenger cars. My 39 Chev coupe gas tank has a 1/4" fitting?? The fuel pump doesn't have a 5/16" inlet either..
Anyone know?
thanks,
Mike

The 1/4" is listed for it in the 1940 parts book and 5/16" in the 1953 parts book.
I can check mine out on Friday.

Chevgene, Were the original fuel lines made of steel?

Actually guys, I tracked down a 37-42' Chevrolet Book of Parts and its says 5/16" COPPER from the gas tank to the fuel pump for all years. Two more questions: 1. How come there is no flexible hose at the fuel pump for vibration? Pontiac book shows it. 2. Book lists a Gas tank shut off cock for 37,38,39,40 & 41' where was this mounted?

The factory fuel line was steel. The copper was suggested for replacement as it was sold off the roll by the foot and was easier to bend.
Most makes cars used a flex hose.Chevrolet had a long part of the line from under the cowl to the fuel pump so it was free to flex with the engine. This is one reason that I would not use copper - the steel will take more abuse.
The shut-off was for trucks only.
I didn't get to check the line size on the (my) '39-will doit this afternoon.

Chevgene,
My 40 Business Coupe has a shut off valve actually screwed into the tank. I don't think Mrs. Williams put it there :) , so I can only guess it is stock or installed by Hopper Chevrolet, in Edmonds, WA. They did some unorthodox things, like the fan in the back window. In 1946 Mrs. Williams almost got hit broadside so she took the car to Hoppers and said "paint it white", They actually painted it cameo cream and told her White was still on backorder. Mrs. Williams is now 98 and she tells me story after story of the early 40's.

That is correct-the 1937-39 coupe (not '39 club coupe) and sedan delivery as well as the 1940-48 business coupe and Sdl. had a shut off valve. This was due to their higher mounted gas tank. The valve could be shut off for such things as replacing the fuel pump. This would eleminate draining the gas tank for the operation.
My 1939 has the original steel 5/16" line from tank to pump and pump to carb.

5/16" Steel brake line is easy to bend and comes with fittings at either end. 1/8" pipe thread at Carb and fuel pump is larger than 5/16" steel tube. The chemicals in copper does not agree with all fuel formulations and will eventually leak. . . Coupe and Sedan delivery have different tank than Coach or Sedan. Double unit trux (Stake & open express) use different tanks than Single unit (Panel, Canopy & Burb).
