Here is the next question from the '490 novice: What is the best way to change a rear tire on the '490? I can not get my 2 ton trolley jack under the rear axle without bumping into the "rod" running underneath the rear axle. I'm sure there is a simple explanation, but I thought I would ask before messing something up. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide!

You should be able to place the jack under the chassis rail where the springs are mounted to the frame. I am pretty sure there is a picture in the 1919-1922 repair manual with the front jacked up at that point , removing the front wheel,

The Ol' Coach,

Something I also did was I cut a piece of 2x4 and added a couple of pieces of wood to the edges of the 2x4 and made a bridge (if you will) that I place in between the axle and the rod so the hydraulic jack lifts on the wooden edge pieces that are bridged over the rod and lifts the axle that way. I do this when I am only picking up one side at a time. I hope you are able to picture what I am talking about. It works very nicely.

Cheers,
Gary

Just checked the repair manual. Page 63 shows a jack under the frame rail a few inches behind front springs, so a few inches in front of the rear springs will be sweet. Less weight in the rear , compared to the front with the engine weight.

Thanks again guys! I got it done by taking a piece of 4x4 and standing it up between the frame rail and the jack - worked fine.
