I am rebuilding the transmission on my 28 Chev car. I bought a rebuild kit that includes the bushings and shafts. The bushing that were in it had oil grooves cut into them. The kit has oilite bushings. Do I need to cut oil grooves in the new bushings? If I do how do I cut the grooves? I was experimenting cutting grooves in the the old bushings with a Dremel tool, that isn't easy and I can't reach all the way in the bearing.
Thanks for your help guys

John

Hi Ziggy ,
Welcome to Chevy Chatter.
If the new bushes are Oilite, the Oilite material is naturally porous , due to the manufacturing process . They will hold oil into the grain structure and so will disperse the oil to all of the bearing area automatically.

Welcome to Chatter.
Jack is right the oilite bushes are porous. I force oil through them prior to fitting into the housing so that there is some lubricant there initially.

Nothing too complicated. Takes a bit of understanding how the shafts come out and photos or notes to be sure that the gears go back in correctly. Some of the bushings might require tools that are not in every garage to remove and/or install. Machine shop should be able to do that work for not too many $$$$.

Thanks Jack and Tony, That is what I thought I just wanted to be sure. How about the sealed bearing that come with the kit, does it matter if I remove the bearing seal on one side?

The sealed bearing is funny situation, if you remove 1 of the seals you reduce the effective overall sealing but by removing the inside seal you allow extra lubrication to the bearing.

Leave the front seal in and remove the back seal so as grease/oil goes through to lubrictae the uni joint. Remember every now and again to drain the excess oild from your diff, otherwise it may seep past the axle seal and get on your brakes.
