Has anyone got any ideas on how to free an exhaust valve that is stuck open?

Have run out of ideas as to how to free it up.

If it is stuck with the spring totally compressed you will have to take off the head to tap it back up.

If there is still some spring compression then soak for several days with PB Blaster or other top quality penetrating oil. Apply small amounts waiting an hour or so between applications. Yes you can not apply overnight when sleeping. Occasionally (like every time you apply more oil) tap the top of the valve stem with a brass hammer or brass drift. If it is solid and the hammer or drift bounces the soak and try again. Once you get the valve to move or have less bounce when tapped (yes I wrote tapped not hammered) then continue light taps and note if the valve keeps going down or rebounds any amount. Once you get rebound you keep tapping, oiling until it finally comes all the way back up. As above once you get the spring totally compressed you are done and have to remove the head to get the valve back up.

Is there a easier quicker way as I was hoping to give it a quick start tomorrow as it is a new car to us and we wanted to see if the engine will start, it has been soaking in a penetration fluid all day when we first noticed it was stuck after adjusting the gaps, which is when we released two were stuck (manage to free one)

Old Chevys (and us folks) require patience, keen observation skills, and stick-to-it commitment.

Life is about enjoying the ride!

Hello D_P,
For the stuck valve cylinder, rotate that piston, by hand, to the compression stroke but not all the way up to t.d.c. (top dead center). Remove spark plug on that cylinder. Stuff as much clothes line rope or other suitable line to fill the cylinder leaving extra length available for retrieval. Rotate the piston, by hand, upward to apply force on the stuck valve. If the piston rotates past t.d.c. without the stuck valve closing, not enough rope was installed. Backup and add more. Push from the bottom and tap from the top. Have I ever done it? NO. But what the heck. The rope shouldn't damage anything. If it turns out to be a complete failure, you can blame it on me, my name is Gunsmoke. Let us know what happens.

You took the words right out of my mouth! I once changed a broken Valve Spring by this method on the side of the road somewhere in Texas! Al W.

I recently helped a retired aircraft mechanic un-stick a valve on a 30 Franklin phaeton. He took the retainer and spring off and installed a drill chuck on the exposed stem. After soaking and turning and generally moving it up and down for a few hours it was free. To replace the spring and keeper we used the rope method to hold the now freed valve in the closed position, worked well. Mostly you are just waiting for the penetrating oil to do its job. If you use the rope to move the valve back up I would think you would run the risk of bending the valve stem which would then mean removing the head to replace the bent valve.

I've used the drill chuck method to remove hood hinge pins and it worked well. Never did use it for a stuck valve so did not want to suggest it, though I think it should work fine. Applying lots of penetrating oil while rotating the valve should flush out the varnish and gum that is causing the sticking.

In reference to this Post, I'll add this. In my 327/350, 1967 Corvette, Our 454/300, 1997, Boat, and especially the 1931 Chevy, I faithfully add Marvel Mystery Oil to the fuel. The Vette and boat still have clean burning exhaust and the 31 gains a little character with the slight hue of Blue Smoke in the exhaust! (Only visible to the Trained Eye!). In the days of Leaded Gas, Valve Stems enjoyed the Lubricating property's of Lead as an additive. Modern fuels, especially E-10 do so much harm to the entire Fuel System and certain internal engine devices. So, I'm a proponent of adding MMO or Automatic Trans Fluid to vehicles without a Catalytic Converter in the exhaust system. Al W.

How much do you add per gallon on fuel?
