Hello from over the pond...

On top of the valve cover ,on a 1930 special sedan, should it have three cuts spaced out across the top or is it a modification that a previous owner has made?

The 30 we had had the vents, and I think that was the first year. The 29 had problems with them rusting from the inside because of condensation.

On my 1930 Valve Cover it had 3 vents as well:
1930 Valve Cover 1
1930 Vavle Cover 2
1930 Valve Cover 3

Where as the 1929 has NO Vents:
1929 Valve Cover

Hope this helps

That is not completely true. The early 1929 valve cover had no vents, but the late 1929 valve cover had three vents.

Thank you for your replys, I wasn't sure if it was suppose to have them because surely the oil will come out of them.

My 37 has the three vent holes and no oil comes out. As a matter of fact so does my 52.

Thanks Junkyard Dog, I do remember you telling me they changed over the Valve Cover and the Push Rod Cover for later 29 models.

My Mistake :/

First tap on each valve stem (can use a brass hammer or drift on end of rocker arm) to see if any valves are stuck. If all are bouncy then they should be okay. Next pull spark plugs, couple of squirts of ATF or MMO or 10W oil in each cylinder. Put fresh oil in the crankcase. Try to rotate the crankshaft. You can use a bar on ring gear teeth or crank or bar in front pulley. Make sure that it rotates freely. Make sure that as many parts as practical are lubricated. Check the ignition and fuel system for function. If that is okay. Then try to start it. Let it rotate several revolutions before actually turning on ignition. If it has fuel and properly timed spark it should start. Check to be sure you have positive oil pressure. Only run it for a short time on first start and vary engine speed up to maybe medium speed. Listen for any unexpected noise. Expect it to put out a bunch of smoke when first starting. Good luck.

Thanks for that advice, the engine turns over by hand, checked plugs and put a drop of oil in the plug holes, also drained the oil and put a bit of fresh in just to keep things capable of moving.

Will let you all know how it goes.
