Gotcha, did not think so...

Seems VERY FEW guys use the RTV. So what do you use, the Permatex No 2 80016 like Chipper, or did I miss a Permatex in there somewhere ??

Seems both 81158 & 82180 are an RTV Products !

Here are some shots of the cover & gasket:

Push Rod Cover Rough Clean Up

Removed Gasket, shot some pictures, as you can see the gasket condition, and the gunk on the Cover itself. Has some silicone residue, orange/reddish residue, and then some black residue. Does not look like it has ever been cleaned all the way up, just wiped off, and another layer of sealant put on with the gasket.

I use and have used a long time 80016 Permatex® Form-A-Gasket No. 2 Sealant
My Dad introduced me to Permatex products over 50 years ago and it is truly good stuff to use on the majority of gasket materials. I do not use silicon products unless at very high temps. The pics are well done and that is a nice old car that looks in good shape. Clean the old material up real well and dry the surfaces down real good. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight, picked up some permatex No 2 last night, when getting some parts for my daily driver's Oil Change.

Need to finish cleaning up the surface of the Push ROd Cover, ordered my Push Rod Cover Gasket and Valve Cover Gasket yesterday, should be here next week sometime.

Just need to figure out HOW to get more hours in a day !??!

ok, got in my Gasket set ON saturday from the Filling Station !! YEAH

Just need to clean up the Gasket surface on the engine and on the Push Rod Cover.

If I need to / want to repaint the cover, Can I paint it with the Filling Station Spray FS-359 ?? could this also be used for the valve cover & oil pan ??

It all depends. You didn't give us enough specifics. Is your engine painted a light gray, a medium gray or a dark gray? FS-359 is a dark blue gray and it is the correct factory color, but if your engine was painted with the Bill Hirsch paint "gas meter gray", (which is the wrong color), or a different gray the FS-359 will not match the existing paint.

Other than the accessories, the complete engine (including the manifolds) was painted dark-blue gray.

I would say the Dark Blue-Gray, the 30 was more light "Gas Meter" Gray.

Looks more like the dark blue gray in the three photos. Therefore the Filling Station paint should be the one to use.

Straight paint was the way it was done at the factory. Primer helps the paint stick to the metal parts.

The choice is yours. As Yogi said "when you come to a fork in the road, take it." Any of the good quality primers will do. Even the spray can primers will be better than just straight paint. Clean, oil free surface is the most important no matter which way you decide to go.

If you use a primer that is close to the finish color it will help to make minor scratches less visible should they happen.

When I painted my 31's I went Napa and bought engine primer it is for hi heat areas worked great.

Found a high temp primer to use that is gray, so that should help out some. also cleaned up the vavle cover, jsut need to rough it up, prime it and paint it. Can not install yet, as still have to check and set the valves.

Also have to order the wicks and install them as well :)

Push Rod Cover is now at the Local Radiator shop, will get dipped n stripped... Then prime and paint once I get it back.

Ok, got my Push Rod Cover back last night :)

It looks great, ready for Prime & Paint, then install new gasket, seal it up and reinstall !!

Well threw down a few Coats of Primer on the Push Rod Cover then a few Coats of Engine Paint from The Filling Station. I am very pleased with the outcome and look of the Push Rod Cover !!

When I go to install the Push Rod Cover, I know many of you recommended Using Permatex 2 to help seal the gasket.

Now should I use Permatex 2 only on the gasket to Cover Surface ?? or Gasket to Block Surface or should I use it on Both Surfaces (Gasket to Cover & Gasket to Block)

And still should only use a thin coat, or should it be used a little more liberally ??

Ok, I am now ready to install my Push Rod Cover Gasket...

Per these discussions, I am going to use Permatex No 2.

Question is Do I:

1- Apply Permatex No 2 ONLY on Surface between Gasket & Push Rod Cover
2- Apply Permatex No 2 ONLY on Surface between Gasket & Engine Block/ Head
3- Apply Permatex No 2 on Both Surfaces between Gasket & Push Rod Cover as well as between Gasket & Engine Block/ Head

Thanks, ready to get this installed, so I can Test Fire, see if it will RUN !!

I put a thin coat of Permatex on the gasket as it is easier than the metal parts. Generally put on gasket, install gasket on cover then coat the uncoated side on the cover. Keeps the mess to a minimum.

If you have a good straight cover and if you want to remove the cover again in the near future, I would only put the Permatex on one side of the gasket and then attach the gasket to the push rod cover. By leaving the engine side of the gasket free of sealer the cover can be removed easily from the engine block several times if needed.

Ok so looks like we have one vote for Option 1 & One Vote for Option 3

Glad to see you guys have different opinions :) Were starting to scare me, that you both have been agreeing lately . . .

I have no problem Permatex to both sides, jsut trying to think how much access (how often) will I need to remove the side cover for access ?? Also since i have the early 29 cover that is vented, as the Valve Cover is non Vented. Does this play a factor as well ??
