Is the horseshoe clip removal tool a necessary tool to remove the clips from the inside handles or is there an easy way to do it without the tool? Are new clips needed usually when re installing the door panel? Any tips? Thanks in advance ...... David

The removal tool is the easiest way to remove the clips. They come right out with the tool.

As I remember, I bought my clip removing tool at the local auto parts store and it was under five bucks at the time. That was many years ago though.

Its my opinion the COT40'c clip removal tool does not work well at all..I used a screw driver..Also be awear if you replace the clips there are many different sizes sold for the same car..Can be frustrating when the crank keeps poping off when you would like to open the window

In another life when I was a body man I bought the plyer type of clip remover. It takes a bit more practice to master but it fits & works on all sizes of clips.

I ordered 7 new escutcheons and I like making my own tools , so I think I`ll try to fashion one myself. Thanks for the review on the clip tool from C. of the 40`s. David

JD is right on about the tool. The old pliers type that he is referring to is best. I have one and wouldn't take anything for it. Well, almost anything..

I have heard that if you squeeze the parts back enough and then insert a shop rag down in the area where it will catch the edge of the clip, and then snap in a quick rotation fashion, it will whip the clip out. I have tried this when I couldn't find my tool but was not successful in doing it this way.

There is no need to use new clips. If you lose one or two let me know and I'll send you what you lose. Free, not even postage. They don't weigh anything.

Good luck with it.

This is the tool JD and I have referred to: Or go to Ebay and type in 1941 Cheverolet tool. It'll come up)

That's the type I use. It takes a bit of practice but it works well once you get the hang of it.

The tool that I use removes the clip just far enough for the handle and the clip to come off together as a unit.

New clips not necessary, when installing the door/window handles I place the clip in the groove then line the handle up in the proper position and give it a sharp wrap. Should slip right on. talk

Yep, I install the handles the same way...with the clip already in place.
