A generator has some residual magnetism that helps produce the initial voltage buildup when it is spun up to speed. That magnetism can reversed with the application of a little current. That is why it is possible to change a positive ground generating system to operate as a negative ground system.

A 1938 Chev generator has a fixed third brush,with a voltage control & cutout combined.The original regulator had 4 terminals,but was replaced by a unit that had only 3 terminals;
"B"(battery),"F"(field),"G"(generator),and was D/Remy p/no. 1118309.

It generates just fine since I polarized it. Now I have another problem, some of the wiring decided to burn! The insulation is in rough shape, bare wires everywhere.
Anyone know where I can find an ammeter?

The first time I ever fixed a problem on a car was to replace the plug wires which my brother had thrown all over the yard. He was pissed at me. Been doing my own mechanic work ever since. Still learning.

My latest dido was a fire in the wiring under the dash. The insurance company said they will pay $625.00. I'm quite able to rewire the old beast, but it is going to be very time consuming

My YNZ harness came with straight forward directions (connect wire "J" to terminal "X" on the dodad and terminal "Y" on the whatsit. Wire "J" had labels on each end identifying it as wire "J". Fairly simple even for me. The hardest part is getting my well fed self into the necessary places to do the work. laugh
