I have a 1930 chev 4 dr. car.most of the wood is rotten or gone. Does anyone know how to replace the wood with steel tubing? I have read somewhere it has been done, just don't know where to start or how to start.

I have a 1932 5 window that was missing most of the wood. So, I took all of it out and replaced it with 1" square metal tubing. It was the first time I ever tried to tackle something like this. It is not the hardest thing to do, you just need a welder, about 60' of square tubing and patience. I don't have a tubing bender, so to curve the tubing I pie cut it and then welded the cuts.

Tighten it until it strips, then back it off a 1/4 turn.

I would recommend going back with wood or if you plan on building a street rod, be concerned with at least the sills, kick-ups & the cross braces. After all, you wouldn't use a 2x4 footer under a block home. I've seen too many of these cars destroyed because people think they are building a bird cage. Preservation and Restoration does not mean metal if it came with wood....Joe

I'm sorry, I defer to jiaccino. My car is a hotrod. Wood is the only way to go for preservation and restoration.

Since you are building a street rod you need to go with metal tubing instead of the standard wood framing.
