I've been driving my 31 for a few weeks now and am wondering. How much road noise should there be? I even put the car in neutral and it's pretty loud. Could it be the rear wheel bearings making Road Noise? Al W.

Well, the FIRST thing is to check and make sure that the noise isn't coming from the right front seat! biglimsorry

I've owned 31's since 1972 and frankly the noise never bothered me. In fact I don't know what you're talking about. I turn my boom box up louder.

In auto research, it is well documented that the largest amount of noise from a car is due to the tires. Yep... The tires engaging the road. This is called "road noise". There have been studies of cars on really smooth road ways, and it's amazing how quiet they can be if you remove the TIRE noise.

Back to your issue however, is a difficult question. There are SO MANY ways that your car could be making noise that it's really difficult to diagnose via Chat. But... we can try. yay

My first suggestion (soon to be overridden by the next person who posts) --- Take your car to the top of a slight hill. Begin to drive down it, and then turn OFF the engine. What happens? Do any noises go away?

NEXT.

Al, If the sound is a rumbling sound it could be a bad front wheel bearing.

Well, tonight I went out to take a diagnostic test drive and the Battery was Stone Cold Dead! I ordered an Optima from Amazon for a reasonable price. (Not). Anyway, next thing I'll do is Jack Her Up, (I like that sound), and manually check each wheel assembly. I just don't know why I think all this is fun! Al W.
