I started my 48 up Saturday morning to head to a cruise-in. When she started I got a loud screaming noise that went away when I let the clutch out to back her out of the garage. Haven't heard it since, but, does this mean my throw out bearing is on borrowed time? Supposedly a new clutch was put in the car shortly before I bought it.

Could the fan belt be loose and making the noise on a cold start? If the TO bearing is the cause it won't get better on its own, if it starts doing it more and more then change it before it causes other problems like tearing up the pressure plate.

Might be better to put the tranny in neutral and not hold the clutch in while starting.

OE,
You may want to check on the medical status of the neighbor's cat.

Thanks Guys for the advice. Charlie - about the cat - I actually had that happen years ago with my 37 Dodge. I started her up and heard this ungodly scream. I opened one side of the hood, and this cat minus lots of fur came running out. Guess he thought the top of my flathead engine was a good place to take a nap. Nope - no cat this go around. Maybe my 48 is haunted!
