The two halves of the spring saddle are bolted around the axle housing.Removeing the bolts will allow removal. They turn on the housing and there is a grease fitting on the saddle to lubricate the area. When the surfaces wear the area between the "halves" can be filed down so they have less clearence. When greased with a grease gun excess grease will seep out from between the saddle and axle housing. If the rear end (differential) gear oil is leaking I would suspect that the housing is worn thru from many years of use, lack of lubrication and dirt grinding away. The saddle fits 1934-36 Standards and 1937 cars (1934-36 Masters had a larger housing size)..The housing its self fits only 1937 cars. The set up was completely changed in 1938 and a rubber bushed bracket was used. The 1938 rear end had a wider tread (wheels farther apart) and may not be used in a 1937.The 1938 has a wider fender so the tires won't rub on the fenders....inner wheel housings were also spaced farther out and the rear seat was wider as a result (in sedans)

mainline57 , the guide plate is rivited on , the diff oil may well be leaking thru the loose rivets .
The only fix I have found to work is to remove the guide plate completely ,, clean it all up and braise the plate and some fresh pins (or bolts if you can get them in) all together.

I have had it suggested to me to tap the axle housing where the original rivet was and screw a cap screw in there just using gasket cement as a sealer ,, but I have not tried that .

thanks mate. that seems to be the problem. although the housing is very worn I have die checked and found no cracks. the saddles have been bead blasted and i will file to fit. I will try the tap and cap head method with some loctite. also thanks chevgene.
regards tim.
