if you replaced the decals, did you put them directly over the black or did you treat them in some way so the black would not show through and distort the yellow color?

I'm thinking, maybe you have "stumped the panel" on this one.

Looking at the oil filters in the link I provided in the other thread, the "yellow" of the decal is some-what darker than the yellow of the filter body.

You put yours on and after it dries, it is a lot different?

Russell I have tried 2 or 3 different methods to retain the color of the decal...The COT40s round decal is for filters with out bands"50s+"this one goes on the body of the filter, most of the decal is clear and when attached the yellow will show through...Not that easy when it goes on the black band...I beleive the filling station has the yellow colored round decal but when put over the black the bright Safety Yellow is no longer bright...I would have thought someone out there has changed out these decals..Mybe I am the only one picky enough to care about the color distortion???

Don't think so!

Looks more like Gray Poupon gone bad than good old Frenches.

I wonder, if you could double-up, one on top of another? stressed

Looks like no help on this one.

Hi Chef -

I had a similar problem with the yellow reproduction "Thriftmaster 235" decal on the valve cover of my '54 3104. I found success by scanning a decal from a supplier. I cleaned up the image with PhotoShop and had a vinyl sign shop cut a "sign" to put on my valve cover. The yellow is solid - no bleed through. However, I don't know if a shop could cut the fine lines and letters that you need for your oil filter canister.
> Closeup of vinyl sign (engine has since been painted gray and new vinyl sign applied)

A member of another forum had a vinyl stencil made. He attached the stencil then sprayed with yellow paint. Once again, I don't think a sign company could cut the small lines and letters that you need.

Another member had an "ink transfer" made at a local sign shop. Similar to the process used to apply water slide decals in our model airplane building youth. Don't know if it would produce yellow that is any more opaque than the one on your canister. I have a contact number for the shop if you need.

... and NO - - you are NOT being too picky!!

PS -
Is that a #501 4-pound radiator cap in your Photobucket album? I've been looking for one. Is it a reproduction? If so, who sells it? Found this original cap listed in Israel - didn't buy.

Loonie thanks for taking the time!I knew there had to be a bunch of creative techniques out there...So far heres where I am at on the oil filter decals...I have taken some 3"x4" adhesive shipping labels and painted them A/C yellow, after they dry attached the reproduction decals to the faces of the yellow labels and cut to shape, peeled off the back and attached to the filter...There is a slight more build up in thickness but not real noticable....
My other attemp was to paint the bracket and top yellow, put on the decals and then tape them up and re-shoot in black
not bad but not great

Both 4#pressure caps look the same and no not reproduction

Yes Rustoleum is correct and if you put the decal on the top of the paint can,I guess you could call it A/C yellow....This was the second paint job on the filter canister, the 1st attempt was Dupli-Color,Daytona Yellow"not close enough"I stripped it and tried again..The A/C yellow is almost fluorescent, without having the paint mixed I think the Rustoleum is a pretty good match

I just read the Rustoleum Technical Data Sheet (TDS) for their spray cans of enamel. It said "Dry Heat Resistance" --- 200 degrees. I would think it should be sufficient. I would think that if the decal itself has enough heat resistance, the paint will be just fine.

You might go with that Israel "deal", I've had good luck w/over seas stuff...Gets here quick, too. I've also had surprising luck just down and the local Auto-Zone...

Yep, I've learned to buy an obscure part that I want when I see it regardless of where it is located, then think about it later. But I'm not real comfortable running a radiator cap that is 60 years old. If I bought one for shows, I'm sure that I would forget to change it after the show - at least forget until water started spewing all over the engine compartment. So I run a not-so-close "reproduction" cap.

Most suppliers of reproduction parts sell this 4# cap. The wording is like late 50's caps. They had an AC logo a few years ago, now they have "TVS", an Indian company instead. It's what I have on my '54 235 truck.
> Reproduction 4# cap

Ecklers sells the original style cap for 7# systems, but not 4#.
> "Correct" 7# reproduction cap

(Chef - sorry for hijacking your Oil Filter thread)
