I engage the door look on my 41 by pushing down on the rod and when I close the door it unlocks. Is there a spring in the lock that might have broke.

Hold the handle down while you close the door and it'll stay locked.

I'll try that, but it just started doing that in the last week.

Ragtop,

Richard is correct. I checked both of my door locks today and they worked as Richard described. Isn't the aging process wonderful as we forget what we have/haven't been doing for years.

Good luck, Mike

My memory isn't all that great, but it seems to me that on GM cars, we always had to hold the handle down or push in the button while closing the door to lock them.

That's how it is on my '51 Chevy. When the door is locked the outside door handle button must be held in while closing the door or the door will unlock.

Even my 79 Aus built GMH truck is the same.

Started to think I was getting forgetful, but checked the pass side, that side will stay locked if the button is pushed down. Could a former owner have made a change.
