Hi All, I am rebuilding my vane style oil pump from my '27 Capitol, but after a few attempts still can't get it to pump. It seems ok when I put it back together, but when I give it a trial run with a bucket of oil, I use a drill and the oil doesn't flow into or out of the pump at all! Could this pump just tooo wore out to work? Please help!!

Are you immersing the pump into the oil up to about 1/2 way so it can be primed?

Thanks Ray!! That's what it took...one more question though, the picture of the same oil pump from the flip book, 28 Engine Rebuild, page 73, shows a washer that goes with the pump. Where does that washer go? When I initially took off my pump, there was no washer! Thanks again for all of your help!

Thanks for the comments.

The washer/bearing goes on top of the oil pump shaft where it engages the distributor.

Anyone working on a 4-cylinder engine or components, should spend some time checking out the "School is in Session" Flip Book.

In the future, or for others putting these pumps back together: liberally oiling the internal parts when putting the pump back together will often provide enough of a seal to prime the pump. Other times squirting oil down the outlet several times and then waiting a short time between squirts can prime the pump.

After rebuilding, testing, installing and priming pump, still no oil pressure to the gauge. All of the lines are clear! Can't even get oil to the filter!! My next step is going to be to try and get the oil distributor out and have a look see. Anybody know of an easy way to get that out?? I can't seem to break the brass coupler away from the distributor!! WD-40? Other penetrating oils?

If you remove the oil pipe nuts on the gauge line & the line to the filter,remove the large steel nut that retains the oil pressure relief valve in the oil distributor body,and see if it's there.It could be either missing or the spring is broken/rusted.If the valve is missing or damaged,the oil will just go straight into the distributor that supplies the troughs for the big ends,and you'll get very little,or no reading on the gauge.

I had a few pumps on the bench and decided to clean them up and bench test them as instructed above.

My method, correct or not, I placed a sheet of 220 wet/dry carbide paper on a flat metal surface and tried to resurface the cap to get rid of minor rust pits and wear marks then I did the main body. Put the vanes back in, submerged it in oil and still nothing. The original factory gasket was .017" thick. I got some .010 and .005" and still no good flow, some but not too good. I ordered some .004 and .002" thick Kapton sheets (2 sheets, 12"x 12" , one of each was about $17) , I used the .002 and it doubled the flow. The .002 is almost as thin as the clear cover on a cigarette pack.

Kapton is heat resistant...no gasket was too tight, would't turn so something has to be in there, better than spending the $300 for a gear pump.
