There is a slight amount of backlash in the steering wheel. If I push on the steering wheel the horn beeps. What causes the backlash? How do I fix it so I can drive the car without beeping the horn by moving the steering wheel.

I don't know what you are referring to as back lash but if the steering wheel can be pulled in and out of the column the worm bearings are either worn or in need of adjustment. See page 9-2 and9-12 of the 1957 shop manual.

Found the problem. Seems that the car has an I-Did-It steering column installed and the rag joint has the slight in/out play. The previous owner had the steering horn guts installed too tight and the horn beeped with any bump of the steering wheel. That's what happens when you buy a customized car. You have to figure out what is different than an original one and correct someone else's handy work.
